上次我们聊过了特别火的概念“Z世代”，那今天，我们来聊美国近一百年里的6个generations。

欧美国家对于generation（一代人），差不多是按照15-20年来划分的。

Generations are typically divided by years and by major events that influence what that generation is like.

他们的一代人通常按年份和影响这一代人的重大事件（major events）来划分。

美国那边是从最近的100年开始keeping track，总结出每一代人特点的，每一代人都有独有的stereotypes and tendencies（刻板印象和倾向）。

•tendency /ˈtendənsi/ n. 倾向

美国的影视剧、文学作品中，经常会出现不同年代的背景，如果你不对美国近一百年的6代背景有所了解的话，可能会搞不懂。

那我们就来了解一下，近一百年美国的6代人。

1.The Lost Generation (born 1901-1927)

失落的一代

The Lost Generation experienced several major events that significantly shaped their lives.

“失落的一代”经历了一些大事件，这些都极大地影响了他们的生活。

比如说，World War I（一战）。通常战争会给人类带来幻灭感和绝望感。

The Lost Generation witnessed the implementation and eventual repeal of Prohibition.

这一代人也见证了“禁酒令”（Prohibition）的实施和最终的废除。

•repeal /rɪˈpiːl/ vt. 撤销；放弃

美国有一部电影《秋日传奇》（Legends of the Fall），禁酒令就为故事提供了重要的背景和冲突。

下面这些文学与影视作品，主要讲的是 The Lost Generation。

•塞林格的小说《麦田里的守望者》（The Catcher in the Rye）

•菲茨杰拉德的《了不起的盖茨比》（The Great Gatsby）

•海明威的《太阳照常升起》（The Sun Also Rises）

这一代人他们的stereotypes and tendencies（时代特点）是：

(1)The Lost Generation experienced a deep sense of disillusionment and cynicism.

他们有很深的幻灭感以及愤世嫉俗感。

•cynicism /ˈsɪnɪsɪzəm/ n. 愤世嫉俗

(2)The Lost Generation struggled to find their place in a post-war world.

他们在战后的世界中找不到自己的位置。

2.The Silent Generation (born 1928-1945)

沉默的一代

This generation grew up during the Great Depression and World War II.

他们成长于美国的经济大萧条时期，以及二战。

This generation is relatively low-key in terms of society and culture.

这一代人很低调，在历史舞台上的存在感较弱。

•low-key adj. 低调的

他们属于二战后的一代人，they tend to value stability, hard work, and loyalty（他们倾向于重视稳定、努力工作和忠诚度）。

跟The Silent Generation一代有关的文学和影视作品有：

•梭罗的《瓦尔登湖》（Walden）-depicts a simple and independent way of life（描绘了一种简单而独立的生活方式）

•《生活多美好》（It's a Wonderful Life）

•《老友记》（Friends）-剧中Ross 和 Monica的爸妈，就是沉默一代。

3.Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964)

婴儿潮

This generation experienced post-war prosperity and social change.

这一代人经历了post-war prosperity（二战后的繁荣），以及social change（社会变革），比如 the Civil Rights movement（民权运动） and the Vietnam War（越南战争）。

这一代为什么被称作Baby Boomers？

They are called baby boomers because it was a ‘boom’ of babies being born after the men returned from war.

他们被称为“婴儿潮一代”，因为男人们从战争中归来后，迎来了婴儿出生的“繁荣”。

关于Baby Boomers一代的影视作品和文学作品：

•《星球大战》（Star Wars）

•《教父》（The Godfather）

•《大白鲨》（Jaws）

这些电影，并不是随着他们成长而拍摄的，它们had a part in making that show values they had as a generation（在展示他们作为一代人的价值方面发挥了作用）。

文学作品《杀死一只知更鸟》（To Kill a Mockingbird） offers a glimpse into the themes, cultural values during the boomer generation（展现了这个时代的主题与文化价值观）。

这一时期也涌现出大量的音乐人，比如：

•The Beatles 披头士乐队

•Bob Dylan 鲍勃·迪伦

•Michael Jackson 迈克·杰克逊

婴儿潮一代人的性格特点：

•individuality 有个性

•work hard 努力

•have high ambition 雄心勃勃

•fight for those they love 为所爱的人而战

•tend to value individualism and personal fulfillment 重视个人主义与自我实现

Young people now often make fun of boomers by saying “okay boomer.”

美国的年轻人笑称婴儿潮一代的人叫“okay boomer”。

这是年轻人对于婴儿潮一代的stereotype（刻板印象）：

not knowing much about technology（不懂科技），and being slow to learn things（学东西很慢）。

4. Generation X (born 1965-1980)

X世代

这一代人生长的背景是economic and political instability（经济政治的不稳定），比如Watergate scandal（水门事件） and the oil crisis（石油危机），这些都shaped them（塑造了Generation X的性格特点）。

•scandal /ˈskænd(ə)l/ n. 丑闻

Generation X的性格特点：

They tend to value independence, adaptability, and work-life balance.

他们倾向于重视独立、适应性和工作与生活的平衡。

美国人对于Generation X的刻板印象有：

•being more angry 愤怒

•feeling like the world is against them 感觉世界对其不利

•very independent 很独立

They are often called the “forgotten generation.” 他们经常被叫做“被遗忘的一代”。

因为Generation X正好处在被瞩目的“婴儿潮一代”和“千禧年一代”中间，在社会和媒体中的关注度相对较低，常常被忽视。

•《现实啰嗦》（Reality Bites）(1994)

•Kurt Cobain（科特·柯本，涅槃乐队的主唱）

5.Millennials (born 1981-1996)

千禧一代

This generation came of age during the rise of the internet and globalization.

这一代人是在互联网和全球化的兴起中长大的。

他们经历的大事件就是：美国911事件。

千禧一代的时代特点：

(1)They tend to value diversity, social justice, and work-life balance.

他们重视多样性、社会正义和工作与生活的平衡。

(2)They are often criticized for being entitled and overly reliant on technology.

他们因过度地依赖科技而被批判。

(3)They are often accused of being lazy or easily offended.

他们经常因为懒惰或“玻璃心”（easily offended）而被指责。

(4)They are also accepting of many types of people.

他们也能接受多种类型的人，比较有包容性。

Millennials are the bridge between Gen X and Gen Z

千禧一代其实是 Gen X 和Gen Z之间的桥梁。

这一时代的歌手有很多，比如说：

·Beyoncé（碧昂丝）

·Justin Timberlake（贾斯汀·汀布莱克）

·Adele（阿黛尔）

·Rihanna（蕾哈娜）

·Taylor Swift（泰勒·斯威夫特）

6.Generation Z (born 1997-2012)

GenZ

这是和科技共同成长进步的一代，他们又被称作“数字时代的原住民”。

Gen-Z对“911事件”没有印象，但绝对是被新冠Covid-19影响的一代。

美国人对于Gen-Z的刻板印象是：

They are addicted to their phones, use shortened English, and are not very independent.

对手机上瘾，喜欢用缩写英语（shortened English），而且不太独立。

Gen-Z还是比较精通科技、独立自主、多元化和具有社会意识的。

但是，他们有时会被指责being easily distracted（容易分散注意力），impatient（不耐烦）以及lacking in face-to-face communication skills（缺乏面对面沟通技巧）。

因为Gen-Z还比较年轻，还没有写出什么代表作，也没有成名电影。但他们很喜欢“后千禧一代”（the later millennials）的书或电影，比如说：

·《 饥饿游戏》（The Hunger Games）

·《分歧者》（Divergent）

·《移动迷宫》（Maze Runner）

·《星运里的错》（The Fault in our Stars）

Z世代喜欢的歌手有：

·Billie Eilish 比莉·艾利什

·Ariana Grande爱莉安娜·格兰德

·Harry Styles哈里·斯泰尔斯

·Khalid哈利德

·BTS 防弹少年团
